Behind “Salt & Skin” Collection: How the Volcanic Eruption of 2021 in La Palma ignited my creativity and produced a new body of Fine Art Photography work

In the realm of artistic creation, there are moments of drought followed by torrents of inspiration that shape the very essence of one's work. For me, the journey to my latest collection, "Salt & Skin," began amidst such fluctuations, weaving through cities, experiences, and finally finding its true genesis in the volcanic eruption of 2021 on the beautiful island of La Palma in the Canary Islands.

The Volcanic Eruption of La Palma in 2021, captured under a state of mental solitude.

Before delving into this transformative chapter, let me rewind a bit to the earlier days of my artistic exploration. My passion for photography ignited in the bustling streets of London, capturing the raw essence of urban life through my lens. The vibrant energy of the city fueled my creativity, leading me to Madrid, where I immersed myself in diverse projects ranging from collaborating with festivals to capturing the soul-stirring performances of musicians. Amidst these endeavors, I carved out a niche with my own portrait studio, also delving into the intricate world of analog photography, where each click of the shutter brought me closer to where I am today, but at a cost for being under my self imposed pressure.

My first year as a full time tutor and student mentor was challenging, but equally fruitful.

Yet, as life often unfolds, there came a phase where the fervor dimmed, and the art felt more like a chore for marketing clients rather than a channel for my innermost expressions. It was during this lull that I turned towards teaching, sharing my knowledge and passion with aspiring artists at La Escuela de Arte Manolo Blahnik. Little did I know that this shift would reignite the dormant embers of my creativity.

An image of how the Art’s School I was just sent to work looked on the first day of work.

The catalyst for my artistic revival came in a spectacular and unexpected form – the volcanic eruption that shook La Palma in 2021. The raw power of nature, the juxtaposition of destruction and creation, stirred something profound within me. It was as if the fiery lava flows and the tumultuous skies above La Palma were painting a new canvas of inspiration.

With newfound vigor, I embarked on a journey to encapsulate the essence of the footprint that La Palma was leaving on me through my lens. The rugged landscapes, the whispers of ancient forests, and the untamed beauty of the coastline became my muse. But beyond the tangible, it was the intangible, the feminine energy that permeates every corner of La Palma, that truly captivated me.

I believe things happen for a reason, and I was meant to be back to my fullest creative potential in this incredible landscape.

In "Salt & Skin," my latest collection, I aimed not just to capture images but to evoke emotions. Each photograph tells a story of resilience, of the enduring spirit of nature, and the timeless allure of the female form intertwined with the island's essence. Through meticulous black and white compositions, I sought to strip away distractions, leaving only the raw, unfiltered beauty to speak for itself.

I discovered a new realm to which I could look into. Human landscapes, skin, textures and raw nature.

The culmination of this artistic odyssey was my solo art show in June 2023, where "Salt & Skin" was unveiled to the world. The response was overwhelming, with viewers mesmerized by the fusion of nature, femininity, and artistic vision. It was then that I realized my mission was not just to create for myself but to share this beauty with others.

Hence, the idea of making "Salt & Skin" accessible to all through wall art and prints was born. Each piece carries a piece of La Palma's footprint in my soul, a reminder of the transformative power of nature and artistry intertwined. Whether adorning the walls of a gallery, a home, or a workspace, these photographs invite viewers to immerse themselves in the timeless elegance and profound depths they encapsulate.

My exhibition was a retrospective view of my work and the public could clearly see the two main stages in my photography: before and after the eruption of La Palma.

As I reflect on this journey, from creative drought to the eruption of inspiration, I am reminded of the cyclical nature of artistry. It ebbs and flows, evolves and transforms, yet at its core, it remains a testament to the human spirit's endless capacity for creation and expression.

In closing, "Salt & Skin" is not just a collection; it's a narrative woven from the threads of La Palma's volcanic legacy, the whispers of nature's secrets, and the artist's unwavering passion. It invites you to embrace the beauty around and within, to find solace and inspiration in the harmonious dance of salt and skin, of earth and artistry.
